Speech Debelle

speech-debelle

The lovely and massively hard working Speech Debelle has been sporting a few SS pieces of late. Glimpsed here with Zane Lowe at her Glastonbury marathon, she’s just been nominated for the Mercury Awards and is gigging for Britain – Raw Rythm, Bloom, Tauron, Bestival…

From her MySpace: The first thing about Speech Debelle that strikes the ear is a contrast. Her voice is warm, youthful and listenable, and if you heard her in the background you might assume that her lyrics were the same. You’d be better placed tuning into them. In common with her new label-mate Roots Manuva, she’s astoundingly honest in her music, detailing and exorcising some very personal demons. That isn’t to say she’s another run of the mill rapper with more complaints than insights. Quite the opposite. Like all musicians worth listening to, she draws you into her universe and makes you glad you visited. There’s always a thaw to the chillier moments. ‘Searching’ is her debut single, and a perfect example of the offbeat, folky production that will litter the forthcoming album, as well as the whisper-in-the-ear quality of her vocals. One thing is certain, hip-hop has never been done in quite this way before. ‘Searching’ makes you wonder why not.

Jack Whitehall & the NME Awards

Jack Whitehall

The charming Jack Whitehall sported the SS Track Suit jacket for the NMEs earlier this year. A terrific gig and many many thanks to Remedy Productions for a spectacular evening – smooth as Jack’s chin.

I’ve been so spectacularly busy I haven’t had a chance to shout about it till now but we were genuinely delighted. Go Jack!

Personal Space Invaders

Personal Space Invaders

Will of PSI is sporting a SS Sidney in this early edit of their latest shoot by Christopher Smith for “Not My Boyfriend” – beeps, squeeks electro-catarrh and some “well weapon” mixes by Jeff Leach and Leatham.

From their MySpace: A London rock tale, post-punk electro band Personal Space Invaders were formed in late 2007 by Italian Will Durzu (Vocals, Synth and Guitars), Irish Adam Liston (Vocals, Synth and Bass) and Australian Timothy Walters (Drums and Percussion). Angular guitars, compulsive bass, seething electronics, powerful vocals coupled with a storming backbeat are trademarks of a band who has always pushed, and frequently crossed, the boundaries of what is pop music. Think a mix of  The Clash, Bloc Party and Friendly Fires and you’ll get an idea of Personal Space Invaders’ distinctive sound.

(In)famous for their energetic live shows, Personal Space Invaders recently supported Plugs and Transformer at London’s Scala and earned a slot at Farmfest 2009. This year, the band was shortlisted for the Red Stripe Music Awards and the Indie Idle competition run by Gaymers Camden Crawl.

The new single ‘Not My Boyfriend’ is out on 28th September 2009 on Mattone Records.
